Judy Istock Butterfly Haven
Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
Chicago, IL
Architect: Ross Barney + Jankowski |
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum underwent a metamorphosis and H.B. Barnard Company was there to orchestrate the change. The Museum enhanced its Butterfly Haven to include new non-indigenous species of butterflies into their very popular exhibit. Great lengths were taken to accommodate these exotic butterflies that came from around the world.
H.B. Barnard Company worked under a tight time frame, not only to meet a deadline set for a big fund raiser for the Museum but also to meet an inspection date by the US Department of Agriculture.
Because the nature of the work was to create a habitat for non-indigenous species, great care had to be taken to make sure the foreign bugs did not get out and create havoc in the city. All openings had to be made secure so we reworked the HVAC systems and secured the entrances and exits of the exhibit.
Other adjustment had to be made as well. New lighting was installed, mesh netting was installed below the ceiling to keep the butterflies down where people could see them, and the entire job was done while the exhibit was in operation. |
